The thesis deals with Liu's life, which serves as a background for understanding his philosophy. An account is given of his career, his relations with contemporary scholars, and the development of his thought and of his moral cultivation, showing that his whole life was directed by a strong sense of morality, which is closely related to his philosophy.

The central idea of Liu's philosophy is commonly known as the doctrine of vigilant solitude (shen-tu), a term that comes from the Great Learning and the Doctrine of the Mean. This is examined through an exploration of other fundamental concepts in his philosophy. They include tranquillity (ching), equilibrium (chung) and harmony (ho), and the mind (hsin) and nature (hsing).

Liu's advocation of the sincerity of the will (ch'eng-yi) marks the maturity of his doctrine. This is examined carefully in the contest of his response to the philosophical challenges of that time. Emphasis is on how he traced the philosophical defects then to Wang Yang-ming's (1472-1529) teachings and criticized Wang's "Four Maxims" (ssu-chu), and finally proposed his own "Four Sentences," which is based on his insight of the concept of the will (yi) in the Great Learning. Nevertheless, his creative interpretation of the will (yi) is still within the basic structure of his thinking.

To evaluate his philosophy, the important features in his work, the Human Schematic (Jen-p'u), is discussed. I have found his criticism of Wang Yang-ming mistaken. However, his efforts shows the structure of his thinking, which differed from that of Wang's, was proposed as a remedy to the defects of the Yang-ming school, and turned out actually to become a further development of Wang Yang-ming's teachings.
