This thesis examines the emergence and development of the Chinese student movement in spring of 1989, the largest grass-roots-initiated movement in the history of the People's Republic of China. A very limited number of studies analyze the movement using social movement theories.

This thesis attempts to answer such questions as: What internal conditions facilitated the emergence and development of the movement and how? What was the historical context in which the movement emerged and how was the emergence related to this context? And how did the political environment affect the emergence and development?

The analysis of the movement is based on three major perspectives of social movement theories: classic approaches identifying the causes for the movement, resource mobilization theory explaining the internal capability and readiness of the students as a social group and the political process perspectives exploring the favourable political environment which facilitates the emergence and development.

The data are collected from three sources. Primary sources are media coverage, insiders' reports, and various documents produced by the Party/state and by students. These sources provide detailed accounts of what happened in 1989 and in the preceding years. Another primary source is participant observation. Secondary sources include articles and books about the movement written by historians, specialists in Chinese studies, political scientists and sociologists. The third sources are "recollections" including interviews with the participants of the movement completed by other scholars, and memoirs produced by the participants.

My analytical strategy is to rely on social movement theories which are used to design the research and to derive research questions. The specific analytical techniques used are mainly description, classification or categorization and making connections.

This research finds that the emergence and development of the movement was closely related to the change and continuity in the economic and political systems, to the internal readiness of the students, to the changes in the political environment, noticeably the division within the polity, and to the interaction between these internal and external conditions. This research suggests that an integration of perspectives of social movement theories is necessary to better understand the movement.
