A barrier jet is found along the northwestern coast in the prefrontal southwesterly flow regime based on analysis of the data collected from multiple platforms during the Taiwan Area Mesoscale Experiment (TAMEX). The barrier jet results from the interaction between the southwesterly flow and the island topography. It generally has a maximum wind speed ($\ge$14 m s$\sp{-1})$ at $\sim$1.0 km above the surface. Under the southwesterly flow regime, a windward pressure ridge develops along the western coast because of blocking of the prevailing low-level flow by the island obstacle. Along the northwestern coast, the airflow accelerates northward with a large cross-isobar wind component down the pressure gradient. The barrier jet reaches the maximum intensity when the surface windward ridge/lee-side trough pressure pattern is most significant.

During 24-25 June, 1987, heavy rainfall occurs over northwestern Taiwan with the maximum along the coast. As a low-level wind-shift line associated with a pressure trough approaches the northwestern coast, the barrier jet along the coast interacts with the westerly flow coming off the southeastern China coast behind the trough to form a strong, localized low-level convergence zone ($\sim$3 km deep). A long-lived rainband develops within the convergence zone. There are several long-lived reflectivity maxima embedded in the rainband. These reflectivity maxima form on the southwestern tip of the rainband where the barrier jet converges with the westerlies behind the low-level trough, intensify within the convergent zone during their movement from the southwest to the northeast along the rainband, and dissipate as they move inland. The repeated generation and maintenance of the reflectivity maxima over the low-level convergence zone maintains the long lifetime of the rainband and produces persistent heavy rainfall along the coast.

Favorable synoptic settings are needed for the development of heavy precipitation over northwestern Taiwan even when the barrier jet is present. For the 24-25 June case, the heavy rainfall occurs over northwestern Taiwan where upper-level divergence in an upper-level jet axis region coincides with the low-level warm, moist tongue. Under these favorable large-scale conditions, the interaction between the barrier jet and the westerly flow focuses heavy rainfall along the coast for this particular case. During 21-22 May, the barrier jet is observed along the northwestern coast, but only moderate rainfall occurs over northwestern Taiwan because both the upper-level and the low-level trough weaken as they move to Taiwan.
