This study is comprised of six chapters. Chapter I provides a brief description of the historical background of the composer and a survey of his output. Chapter II provides descriptions of certain Chinese musical and aesthetic elements that are related to Wang's music, and to assist in the understanding of the possible compositional connections between the works and their ethnic origins. Chapters III, IV, and V are detailed analyses of three selected works. In general, each chapter begins with a brief description of the background of the composition and proceeds to a structural analysis of the piece. A formalistic approach of analysis is applied to examine the structural organization of the works. The last section of each analysis addresses the stylistic characteristics of the piece in relation to Chinese musical traditions. The concluding chapter, Chapter VI, summarizes the analytical findings in the preceding chapters on Wang Li-san's style and ethnic influence. The study concludes that Wang Li-san's piano works, in many important aspects, reflect his cultural heritage on both the musical and aesthetic levels.
