The main purpose of this study was to examine the relative influences of family support and peer support on Taiwanese adolescents' ability to cope with the stressors from school, parents, peers, self, and the opposite sex.

Three hundred and forty-seven 7th graders from two junior high schools in Taiwan were recruited to participate in this study. Subjects were asked to complete the scales of perceived social support from family and peers (PSS-Fa and PSS-Fr) (Procidano and Heller, 1983), a scale including five potential stressful situations that may have been experienced by adolescents most often in the past two months, a question regarding the degree of perceived stressfulness of the stressors, and a coping scale corresponding to each stressor (Kuan, 1993).

Five hypotheses were tested using a series of analyses including paired-t tests, MANOVAs, ANOVAs, and regression analyses. Findings from this study partially supported each of the hypotheses. This study revealed that overall, Taiwanese adolescents tended to use more instrumental coping and less avoidance/emotional coping in dealing with five different stressors. There were no differences between adolescent boys and girls in perceiving stress of five stressors and in the use of instrumental coping. However, compared to adolescent girls, boys were more likely to use avoidance/emotional coping across stressors.

Moreover, partially supporting the hypothesized models, family support and peer support were found to have an additive effect as well as a compensatory effect on adolescents' use of instrumental coping. High support from both family and peers predicted the highest frequency of use in instrumental coping. However, when one side of support was perceived to be low, high support from the other side would compensate the deficiency and lead adolescents to use more instrumental coping in dealing with the stressors from school, peers, self, and the opposite sex.

Furthermore, in addition to family support and peer support, perceived stress was found to be an important predictor in coping styles when confronted by some particular stressors. In facing the stressors from parents and the opposite sex, a significant effect for perceived stress was obtained for both adolescent boys and girls; whereas a significant effect for perceived stress was not found for adolescent girls in dealing with the stressors from peers and self, or for either adolescent boys or girls in solving problems from school.

Finally, although family support and peer support were found to have an additive effect as well as a compensatory effect on Taiwanese adolescents' use of instrumental coping, family support was found to be more important in predicting the use of coping styles (including instrumental coping and avoidance/emotional coping). This finding is consistent with previous studies in that family support occupies the central place in adolescents' general well-being (Greenberg, Siegel, and Leitch, 1983; Wills, 1986; Steinberg, Dornbusch, & Brown, 1992).
