Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1996.
This study examined both short- and long-term effects concerning the implementation of selected activities from Project WILD on fifth-grade children's knowledge about, and attitudes and behaviors toward, wildlife and the environment in Taiwan, R.O.C. The subjects were a sample of six intact classes from a primary school located in the city of Tainan, Taiwan. Three classes were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n = 140); the other three classes became the control group (n = 143). The experimental treatment was the instruction of seven Project WILD activities over a four-week period in 1995, while the control treatment was an alternative instruction similar in both duration and teaching strategies. Test instruments used were a researcher-generated knowledge test modifying Gilchrist's (1992) instrument, the Children's Attitudes Toward the Environment Scale (CATES) (Musser & Malkus, 1994), and a self-reported behavior test, revised from the Behavior Inventory of Environmental Action (BIEA) (Sia, Hungerford, & Tomera, 1985-1986). Subjects received the three tests prior to the treatment, immediately after the treatment, and again after three months. The statistical procedure used to evaluate the data was Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) for repeated measures with the pretest scores as the covariate and the posttests scores as the dependent variable.

Based on the findings, it was concluded that the selected Project WILD activities positively affected the participating fifth-grade children's short-term knowledge about and attitude toward wildlife and the environment in Taiwan, while the effects will inevitably attenuate to a large degree over the long term. Also, it was concluded that the fifth-grade children exhibited responsible behaviors toward wildlife and the environment in Taiwan after experiencing the Project WILD activities. In light of the research outcomes, the author suggested that children should be exposed to Project WILD activities on an on-going, long-term basis. In addition, an environmentally sensitive teacher as a role model in school appeared to be important during implementing Project WILD activities.
