This study examines two assertions in Mandarin Chinese: (a) that internal linguistic forms and discourse-pragmatic functions interact at different levels and (b) some so-called "meaningless" grammatical elements such as "de" convey meaning at the discourse level. To test these two assertions, this study includes a discourse analysis of the particle "de" in Mandarin Chinese, which has long presented a problem to linguists as well as to Chinese learners and instructors, especially, "de" in Adjective+de+Noun (AdN) constructions which have equivalent Adjective+Noun (AN) constructions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The major finding of this study is that differences in the forms of AN and AdN constructions entail communicative differences. In modern Mandarin Chinese, the adjective accompanied by the additional element "de" is not only syntactically and phonetically "heavier" but also communicatively "heavier" in the sense of being focused or emphasized in discourse.
