Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Dallas, 2014.
This project will analyze and illustrate the manners in which African American writers have used the female character in literature to reveal those factors that have offered challenges in her ability to mother. The dissertation begins with an overview of critical research performed on womanhood and motherhood in general and explains the impact of society's predefined definition of "woman" and "mother" on the African American female. Chapter One of the dissertation includes the narratives of William Wells Brown, Moses Roper, Harriet Jacobs, Toni Morrison, and Zora Neale Hurston to portray the ways that the African American woman is able to manipulate the unreachable expectations placed on her by society in order to mother (or reject as in the case of Hurston) her children. Chapter Two uses Alice Walker's The Color Purple, James Baldwin's Go Tell It On the Mountain and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye to illustrate how the black mother is challenged by Christian religious practice. These women are guided through motherhood by their views of Christian principles. Chapter Three focuses on Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Toni Morrison's Sula, and Nella Larsen's Passing to present the African American female's sexuality as a "threat" to her role as mother. The sexual label that was assigned to her during slavery follows her thereafter. Chapter Four uses Richard Wright's Black Boy and Native Son to argue the ways in which violence threatens the African American woman's performance as mother. Wright presents some of the most extreme cases of violence displayed in the relationship between the black mother and her children. Chapter Five concludes the dissertation with an analysis of dramatic works that portray the long-lasting effects of all forms of enslavement in the areas of the mother's religion, sexuality, and violence.
