Small businesses, with 20 or fewer employees, represent 89% of businesses in the United States and are major contributors to the economy. One challenge business owners face, is that business failures usually occur within the first 5 years of opening. The focus of this mixed method research was to determine if a correlation existed between the business owner's psychological hardiness and small business success and to determine if business owners identified similar characteristics, attitudes, and strategies, as contributors to their business success. Empirical research indicated psychological hardiness as an effective predictor of success in a variety of fields, including nursing, the military, academia, and in expatriates.

The sample size consisted of 128 small business owners from the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex utilizing the non-probability sampling method. Hardiness was measured utilizing the 15-item Dispositional Resilience Scale and responses from the survey provided qualitative information. A correlation was not found between hardiness scores and small business success; however, qualitative analyses indicate owners attribute business success to hardiness traits. Owners identified commitment, control, and challenge as the top contributors to business success.

Other traits owners identified as contributors to business success: personality, skills, education, experience, faith, workers, financial management, reward, failures, and support systems. The results suggest that faith in God contributes to hardiness scores. Belief in God may have an impact on the hardiness scores and control subscale scores, resulting in the lack of statistically significant findings regarding the relationship between hardiness scores and business success.

Statistically significant differences were not found in hardiness scores by age. Analyses revealed significant differences in hardiness scores by gender, ethnicity, and in the subscales commitment, control, and challenge, according to the number of years in business, by gender and ethnicity. Qualitative analyses indicated that hardiness traits are associated with business success and quantitative analyses indicated that faith in God may impact hardiness scores. These findings may be used as the foundation for continued research regarding hardiness and business success.
