Spaces of Risk: The Modern Long Poem Revisited examines the long poems of three women writers in order to demonstrate the need to revise the critical assessment of the form. The study argues that by including the work of Gwendolyn Brooks, Gertrude Stein and H.D. in the canon forces a redefinition of the form itself and calls on a feminist, pragmatist reading of their projects. To prove their significance, Spaces of Risk suggests how their work influences later male and female writers such as Robert Duncan and Susan Howe. Framing the study is a historical context of the long poem in American literature, which explains the scope of the project and its importance to feminist criticism and American literary studies. The examination includes an analysis of each poet's intervention in the long form; the study assesses their experimental language, style, and subject matter and reads their own lives as texts that inform their creative productions.
