Thesis (M.A.)--Texas A&M University - Kingsville, 2010.
Though wildly misunderstood by its contemporaries, British author Vernon Lee's [Violet Paget's] prophetic novel Miss Brown (1884) reveals an altogether unseen approach to fin de siecle aesthetics. Whereas the current consensus views the period as liberating and individualized, Lee reveals that it was in fact oppressive, hegemonized, and ruled by ideologies of reification and consumption. Lee's protagonist Anne Brown is taken from rustic Italy to the metropolitan center of London where she is offered a rare glimpse into a society caught in almost mechanistic hierarchies producing assembly-line art as an extension of ideology. To this inhuman system, Lee offers an alternative aesthetic paradigm where objectification and indoctrination are unnecessary. The result is Lee's forging of a Cixousian anti-Logos, her exalting of the divine Sophia, and her revealing of life itself as art.
