Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1997.
This dissertation examines the evolution of an organizational population over time and the impact of stratification, legitimacy, and history on organizational survival and change. Drawing from organizational theory, sociology, history, and higher education, the dissertation examines changes in American liberal arts colleges. During these years, the colleges encountered a turbulent environment characterized by market changes and resource depletion. Challenges emerged from multiple contexts--economic, demographic, political and social--with the colleges attempting to draw on their resource reserves and to identify and develop new sources of competitive strength.

Several questions were examined and tested using Carnegie and HEGIS/IPEDS data. The first examined the nature of the environmental turbulence and its effect on competition among the liberal arts colleges. Organizational mortality and survival were found to be linked to the resource dependence characteristics of the institution (wealth, status and reputation, and institutional linkages). Lower status colleges were more likely to fail than those that were not, and they were also more likely to adapt to the perceived needs and preferences of potential consumers.

Three sets of mechanisms were triggered by the changing demographic and economic picture. First, there was a renewed sensitivity to the demand characteristics of the market: non-elite liberal arts colleges became more comprehensive and coeducational, and most developed career-oriented programs. Second, private colleges developed new financial aid and pricing mechanisms which served to keep tuition competitive with public institutions, and also to generate revenue for the colleges--private liberal arts colleges used endowment, gifts, and other institutional resources to subsidize tuition for most students via tuition discounting and competitive pricing. Finally, federal education policy and legislation served to support the continued existence of private colleges as an alternative to public institutions.

A primary set of explanations for this form's resilience lies in its strong sociopolitical legitimacy and institutional history. The dissertation concludes by discussing the implications of the findings for theories of organizational stratification and change and also for higher education policy.
