In the field of trauma psychology, the study of child abuse is of particular interest due to both its prevalence, impact on later psychological functioning, and subsequent societal cost. The impact of child trauma has been researched with regard to psychopathology and interpersonal functioning, but has not been fully addressed in another important domain---spiritual and/or religious functioning. In this study, the domain of spiritual/religious functioning is examined in regard to treatment of child abuse through spiritually-oriented trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. One of the most important aspects of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy is the production and processing of a trauma narrative. Previous research has not addressed best practice measures for discussing religion/spirituality within the context of the trauma narrative. Therefore, therapist efficacy in addressing spiritual/religious issues within the trauma narrative is specifically investigated in this study. The study sample (N=8) was taken from a clinical trial of spiritually-oriented cognitive behavioral therapy for children and adolescents. Efficacy was addressed through qualitative questionnaires completed by the participating therapists and clients. Themes for successful intervention and recommendations for future development are discussed.
