In light of the prevalence rates of bereaved college students, the developmental stage of college students, and the unique grief reactions following mass trauma, it is essential to gain a deeper understanding of students' bereavement-related needs following mass trauma. Hermeneutic phenomenological theory was utilized in this study to examine the lived experiences of three psychologists employed at a university-counseling center following a mass trauma. The research questions guiding the study included: What were the experiences of mental health professionals who provided mental health services to a university community impacted by mass trauma? In the view of these providers, what are the unique long-term mental health and grieving needs of individual students who experienced a mass trauma on their college campus? In their view, which strategies facilitated healthy grieving at the individual and community levels, and which were less effective? The study measures were field notes, reflective journaling, a demographic questionnaire, and a semi-structured interview guide. For explication of the data, the Hycner's five-phase approach to making meaning for phenomenological data was used. Ten units of significance were identified: psychological impact from bereavement and mass trauma, risk factors in severity of symptom presentation, resiliency factors in minimizing symptoms, desire to feel understood by community members, role of memorials and rituals, efforts to facilitate grieving, increase in sense of community and social responsibility, cultural considerations, personal impact on coresearchers and vicarious traumatization, and systemic considerations regarding how a university can better prepare for the bereavement needs of college students following a mass trauma. It is the hope of the principal investigator that these findings provide useful recommendations for future training efforts, policy changes, systemic organizing, program development, and future research to more effectively meet long-term bereavement needs following mass trauma in a university setting.
