This project proposes an emotion-focused parenting program based in attachment theory, mindfulness, and parental meta-emotion philosophy. The program consists of 8 group sessions, including a program evaluation and follow-up session. The purpose of the program is for parents to explore their internal working models and reactions to emotions in their lives, and the lives of their children. Parents are invited to deepen their self-understanding through mindfulness practices, affect synchrony, and integrative communication. Parents are also encouraged to evaluate their parenting style, evaluate their parenting practices, and to promote behavioral change and empathic understanding of their internal arousal states and sensations, and similar experiences in their children. Through mindfulness and meta-emotion philosophy, parents will learn ways to respond to their children attentively when in distress, rather than react in a dismissive or disapproving manner. Kids, in turn, will benefit by feeling increasingly felt and heard by their parents, which will positively impact their immediate relationships, adaptability, school functioning, and attachment style.
