Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
The field of fine art authentication is burdened with many challenges: historical information is scarce, scientific analysis has only limited capabilities, and connoisseurship relies on subjective judgment. The most perilous challenge, however, is the field's relationship with the commercial art market. Academically, authenticity is a fluid concept that can harmlessly change according to discovered information and newly minted techniques. Commercially, authenticity is at the heart of a work's value. Collectors, who believe they are purchasing an authentic work by a particular artist, are in fact betting phenomenal sums of money that the work will either sustain or increase in value. If the piece's authenticity is found to be false, the collector can lose his entire investment. This paper frames art as an investment and asserts that a reorganization of the market is necessary to protect not only the authentication expert, but also the success of the art trade.
