Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
As 'blockbuster' museum and gallery exhibitions continue to flourish, popular art fairs keep popping up each year, and cities around the world launch their own biennials, many sectors of the art market struggle to maintain a presence in today's event-driven art world. The word "event" in the term "event-driven" defines any occurrence significant enough to be widely attended by the public, covered by the media, and viewed as important by critics, curators, collectors, galleries, artists and other art world insiders. This paper will examine the factors that drive the proliferation of events in the art world, while examining the human need to take part in these events, and the economic consequences of attending and/or missing these events. It will also examine how galleries, artists, collectors, fair directors, biennials, auction houses, museums and other non-profit institutions approach the ever-growing economic landscape of the art world, analyze the sustainability of the current event-based models, and explore future potential models.
