Previous research has demonstrated that experiences at work carry over into and affect family life. It has been suggested that the unique nature of the mental health profession holds a particular susceptibility to work-related spillover. Nonetheless, very limited empirical research exists regarding the impact of work stressors in this domain on the interpersonal relationships of those serving it.

The study hypothesized that mental heath professionals with higher levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress would also report disturbances in their personal relationships. Self-care activities and social support were explored as related variables. Results demonstrated significant correlations such that higher levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress were associated with more destructive relationship conflict behaviours, and lower levels of relationship satisfaction, social intimacy, and perceived social support. Engagement in self-care activities was inversely related to burnout and secondary traumatic stress, and positively associated with social and intimate relationship functioning.
