Thesis (D.C.S.)--Colorado Technical University, 2013.
Cloud Computing changed the dynamics in the way users and companies use electronic communications devices. Companies need more mobile people to reach customers, and users often prefer their own personal devices to access data that is personal and proprietary information vital to a company. Businesses have begun creating a mobile workforce not only to meet the demands of today's centric people, but also to sell their products and services while still accessing personal data. Users are bringing their devices with them to access data that is either personal and/or proprietary to perform their jobs thus eliminating the need to carry two phones. More businesses allow personal devices to access company email and data in order to reduce the need for issuing company-owned devices.

This move for users and businesses alike has created big security issues when accessing company data on a personal device. Also, the user is open to threats that a company is subjected to when accessing data on the user's personal devices and cloud storage areas. Accessing these business or personal areas and transmitting data back can create vulnerability to a user in the middle attack. Such attacks are costly not only in risk to personally identifiable information, but also to proprietary information of the company. The authentication of mobile devices brings a new front for security personnel to protect data no matter where it resides or to where it transmits.

This dissertation focused on Authentications in Mobile Cloud Computing, and investigated mobile security risk and security coverage. It suggested that, while cypher keys employed may seem reasonable, they lacked sufficient coverage to protect mobile devices authentication that is layered in the provider systems. This study examined current mobile architecture and how companies use it to access data on a network. Mobile security is a main driver in protecting data in the mobile workforce where security must be addressed to protect the information accessed. Based on current technology, cryptic keys are employed in systems to protect this information.
