Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2015.
My dissertation is an ethnographic study of Chinese upper middle class youth nationalism. I conducted two-semester long fieldwork from August 2011 through June 2012, primarily at a private boarding International Baccalaureate high school in Shanghai, using compact camcorders to document what everyday youth nationalism looked like on the ground and the specific circumstances under which Chinese 11th graders identified with the Chinese nation. I employ the idea of everyday nationhood in "examining the actual practices through which ordinary people engage and enact (and ignore and deflect) nationhood and nationalism in the varied contexts of their everyday lives". I ask the following questions in my dissertation to reveal Chinese IB students' negotiation of national identifications: What are Chinese IB students' perceptions of the Chinese nation state? Under what circumstances and how do Chinese IB students mostly of the upper middle class identify or resist identification with the Chinese nation state?

My dissertation will contribute to three bodies of literature. First, it will enrich the study of nationalism in China, as well as in post-socialist and post-colonial societies in general. Second, my dissertation will contribute to qualitative studies of education, state power and student subjectivities. Last, it will contribute to the literature on the interactions between the International Baccalaureate's global citizenship education and citizenship education of nation states. My dissertation is the first visual ethnography of Chinese upper middle class youth nationalism contextualized in everyday life; it challenges the simplistic perceptions of Chinese state-led nationalism and nationalistic youth fervor. It re-situates Chinese youths and their sense of Chineseness within their educated everyday lives.
