Analysis of literature indicates that women who attempt to advance their careers in higher education may still experience career setbacks. Few studies exist that describe the lived experiences of women from their own perspectives regarding career advancement. The purpose of this study was to better understand the problem of advancement issues for women in higher education and what factors may help or hinder their career development and advancement. This study used a qualitative exploratory approach to explore the lived experiences of female mid-level college administrators. Findings indicate that women have similar internal and external factors that they believe help or hinder their career development and advancement. In addition, women use similar strategies to overcome obstacles encountered in career development and advancement.
