This study proposed to describe and analyze how the applied foreign language training program was used by Miles, Inc., to teach German to its North American employees from the program's inception in 1978 to 1994. Particular emphasis was given to the instructional program at Miles-Polysar Rubber Division in Akron, Ohio, where the German courses were offered beginning in September, 1991, as well as to the historical evolution of the training program. Questions posed by the study were: which factors contributed to the implementation, development, present structure and future direction of the Miles German program; how has the program been valued/perceived by Miles management and employees; and what has been the philosophy regarding instructional methodology materials, course content, and the evaluation of employee performance?Subjects--Topical Terms:

Data for this study was gathered in three phases: a review of archival data, the distribution of a questionnaire to Akron-site employees, and interviews with employee participants, instructors and administrators. An examination of relevant archival data included materials such as employee handbooks, course descriptions, texts and examinations. These sources provided insights into the program as a whole. The questionnaire and interviews yielded data on the program's inception, development and future directions, as well as on employee opinions attitudes and evaluations of the program. The data was then synthesized to provide a composite picture of the Miles, Inc. German language program.

The data gathered from this study suggest that the Miles program has evolved from an academic model of foreign language instruction which has been modified to meet company needs and objectives. The instructional calendar, course lengths and texts used support this claim. Employees involved in the program found it relevant to their jobs and viewed the instructional format as being largely effective. Concerns raised included schedule conflicts, frequent travel resulting in absences, slower than expected progress and the occasional lack of support from supervisory personnel.

The findings of this study suggest that Miles instructional program offers insights into the development of an applied foreign language teaching program. The ideas which have been tested at Miles, Inc., over the past two decades could prove particularly beneficial to institutions and organizations seeking to develop language programs targeted at business personnel and students of business administration.
