My dissertation posits the intellectual and socio-political context of the late Renaissance as fertile grounds for comparison between Schiller's and Shakespeare's plays. The usurpation theme, which figures so prominently in the work of both playwrights, is embedded in the larger framework of a historical transformation process that saw the traditional feudal society be supplanted by the absolutist state. Schiller's understanding of this ideological conflict, I submit, is in part mediated by his reception of Shakespeare. In a discussion ranging from Die Rauber to Wallenstein, I trace the development of the usurper motif in terms of the Renaissance discourse in which it is couched. While my analysis joins in the debate initiated by the new historicism and cultural materialism, I am most concerned with challenging the commonly held view of Schiller as an "Aufklarer." The study as a whole provides good reason to believe that Schiller's preoccupation with issues of legitimacy, autonomy, political power and ethics is no more indebted to Kant and other German idealists than it is to Renaissance political philosophy.Subjects--Topical Terms:
