Thesis (Ph.D.)--Mississippi State University, 1997.
In recent years, faculty members in the universities of Taiwan have come to value research much more than before and the relative importance assigned to research and teaching has shifted. This significant increased emphasis on research has bought about considerable conflict and changes in pressure in higher education in Taiwan. This trend and its impact on academic performance are important to system administrators, researchers, and faculty. The purpose of the current study was to address this issue by increasing our understanding of the relationships among Taiwan faculty members' self-efficacy, perceptions of their work environment, and their research productivity.

A random sample of 255 full-time faculty members was drawn from five sampled institutions in Taiwan. The predictors (independent variables) were measured by the Research Self-Efficacy Scale (RS-ES) and Faculty Work Environment Scale (FWES). The criterion variable (dependent variable) was measured by the Faculty Involvement in Research Scale (FIRS). The reliabilities for these three measures were considered satisfactory (i.e., ranged from.77 to.94).

Pearson Product-Moment correlations and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the study's three hypotheses. The results indicated that significant correlations existed between the criterion variable (research productivity) and predictor variables (self-efficacy and work environment), individually and in combination. These findings were quite consistent with previous findings based on Bandura's social cognitive model and Moos' person-environment model. The results suggested that faculty and administrators who are working to improve research performance and work climate in their respective institutions should attend to the personal and environmental factors addressed in this study.

It was recommended that type of university and college should probably be taken into consideration in future, related studies. In addition, both teaching and research need to be incorporated into future study models so that the relative influence of both on overall academic performance can be addressed. A supplementary measure of work environment based more on peer-ratings or in-depth interviews with faculty may also be needed. Finally, it was recommended that a Chinese version of the inventory measuring faculty perceptions of their work environment should be developed and a related cross-cultural comparative study involving research productivity in higher education undertaken.
