This study examined the Chinese model of motivation for learning. Instead of the conventional concept of "achievement motivation", the Chinese folk term "hao-xue-xin", in English "the heart and mind for wanting to learn", was used. This native concept refers to one's enduring desire to learn, for which every child is expected to strive. Prototypical methods were employed to collect learning-related words and phrases in Chinese for subjects to sort out in order to map out dimensions of this learning model. In addition, subjects described in writing their ideal persons with "hao-xue-xin". The sorting data yielded basic dimensions such as "lifelong pursuit" as a goal of learning, "seeking knowledge" as a basic orientation, "self-determination, diligence, endurance of hardship, and single concentration" as a set of behavioral principles, and "breadth and depth" as an important criterion of achievement.

Analyses of the written descriptions produced five prototypes of learning: (1) The cognitive/conception prototype centers around the view that knowledge is a need to perfect oneself, while (2) "self-cultivation" in the moral/virtuous prototype holds the key to the integration of learning and moral development. (3) "Study hard" occurs regardless of learning conditions in the behavioral prototype, and (4) the social nature of affect and "modesty" emerge as additional categories of emotion in the affective prototype. Finally, (5) family support and sacrifice constitute the foundation in the social support prototype. This study revealed some differences between the traditional concept of "achievement motivation" and hao-xue-xin. First, while achievement motivation is defined more in behavioristic terms, hao-xue-xin rests on people's conceptions of knowledge (i.e., what knowledge is, how one acquires it, etc.) and how they are translated into the active role taken by the learner to seek knowledge. Second, the moral dimension has rarely been part of achievement motivation, but it plays an essential role in hao-xue-xin. Third, achievement motivation is conceptualized and studied mostly as an individual-centered notion, but the social nature has been demonstrated to be central to hao-xue-xin. Finally, but foremost, theory and research of achievement motivation have relied exclusively on specific tasks and situations. By contrast, hao-xue-xin focuses on long-term desire to learn.
