Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1997.
This thesis, written under the direction of Professor Peter K. Bol, locates the changing role of concubines in premodern China within the larger context of major transformations in society and kinship from the Tang (618-907) through Ming periods (1368-1644). It explores these changes by examining classical commentary, political and ritual debates, legal codes, law cases and genealogies.

The social identity of concubines was complex, forming a continuum from courtesan-like entertainers at the one extreme to household members with much of the rights and duties of wives at the other. Nevertheless, this thesis attempts to describe the dominant attitudes towards concubinage throughout the period under study. It argues that in Tang a concubine's identity was conceived as much in terms of servitude as of kinship. Beginning from the Song (960-1276), as recent scholarship has shown, elite society in China was transformed fundamentally. A "national" ruling elite centered on the capital gave way, from the twelfth century, to local elites whose power was derived largely from their influence in local society.

This shift was accompanied by a reorganization of the kinship system. The Tang era was dominated by the "great clans," whose status was reinforced by recognition from the imperial court. By the mid-Ming period, the rise of local elites had led to the development of a corporate lineage system rooted in local society, particularly in southern China. The gradual emergence of this lineage system was accompanied by the adoption of a new moral conception of the family, influenced by Neo-Confucianism, and a new set of kinship relations. These, I argue, raised the position of concubines in the kinship system. Thus, the replacement of a nationally-centered ruling elite by local corporate lineages and accompanying changes in family ethics had a profound impact on the role of concubines. Concubinage was transformed from an identity based largely on servitude, to one firmly rooted in the kinship system.
