This is a study of China's regional urban systems in the post-Mao period of 1984-1993. The death of Mao ushered in a new era of relative liberation and openness, which led to a welcomed explosion of information about many aspects of Chinese cities and resulted in a large number of urban studies of China. However, while these studies have presented an array of descriptive accounts of Chinese urbanization, there is still a lack of comprehensive and rigorous statistical analysis of the dynamic relationship between China's urban system and the process of regional development. This thesis is an attempt to fill this void.

This thesis is an attempt to fill this void.
520 $a A central question about the Chinese urbanization process is whether it is different from that of the industrialized west and/or that of the developing countries in general. My findings suggest that China has had a different development path. If the pre-reform development pattern was characterized as both hierarchically and spatial diffused, the post-reform pattern can be characterized as "concentrated (spatially) decentralization (hierarchically)". The data show that while industrial growth in this study period was spatially concentrated near regional urban centers, it was nevertheless diffused among cities of various size categories rather than concentrated in a few large urban centers.
