The focus of this dissertation is the European roman a clef and the Chinese yingshe method of composition in fiction. This dissertation argues that, comparing to the European roman a clef, the yingshe or the element of "historical referentiality" (historical people and events being implicitly portrayed in fiction) has played a central role in the overall development of traditional Chinese fiction. This element makes traditional Chinese fiction different from its counterpart in the $\rm 18\sp{th}$ and $\rm 19\sp{th}$ century European tradition in terms of their methods of composition. On the European side, I focus on Mlle de Scudery and Mrs. Manley, while on the Chinese side, I examine the functions, models, and techniques of this referential element throughout the history of traditional Chinese prose fiction, from the classical chuanqi to the vernacular zhanghui xiaoshuo. The poetics of historical referentiality distinguishes the analogical imagination from the mimetic imagination. This new perspective in viewing traditional Chinese fiction as a special kind of "roman a clef" has important implications that will contribute to our further understanding of the nature and the characteristics of both European and Chinese fictions in a more universal context.
