This dissertation explores the impact of China's rural economic reform on peasants' family household income and wealth as well as on peasants' subjective reactions towards this reform. It begins with a macro comparative study between Taiwan and China with the aim to document how the introduction of market reforms has contributed to the rapid expansion of the mainland's economy. The study then moves on to a micro analysis that examines how market reform in China has affected individual family households in terms of income, wealth and subjective attitudes. Time series and cross-sectional multivariate analyses are utilized. The major argument of this dissertation is that rural economic reform in China has created an environment that motivates and enables peasants to better use their human resources and physical resources to gain income and wealth, and consequently, they have positive attitudes towards reform.
