The purpose of this work is to examine illustrated letters and how the fields of illustration and graphic design interact through them. A brief overview of the history of written communication follows letters from primitive forms of communication to the Greek alphabet, Roman letterforms, Gothic writing and book illumination, moveable type, and handwriting masters on through the Victorian era and the Gaslight style, poster design, Modern and Swiss design and ends with the advent of the computer and design software.

Ten artists were chosen in an effort to get an in-depth look at their work, thoughts and processes. These specific artists were chosen because they have a wide array of lettering, they create with a distinct voice, and the author has been drawn to their work. The artists include Dado Queiroz, Dana Tanamachi, Jeff Rogers, Jessica Hische, Jim Datz, John Hendrix, Jon Contino, Josh Luke, Mary Kate McDevitt, and Yulia Brodskaya.
