Each year 65,000 student-athletes graduate from NCAA Division 1 institutions. Approximately 52,000 of these student-athletes will enter into sport retirement and end their sport career forever. This study explored the phenomena of student athlete retirement with aims to gage the factors that impacted the quality of retirement. Five retired and three current student-athletes completed a one-time interview with objectives including: (a) the strength of athletic identity, (b) preparation before retirement (c) psychosocial support before and during retirement and (e) perception/reflection of retirement. The data was organized using open coding in NVIVO and scrutinized into five overall themes that emerged from the nodes and categories involved in this study. This exploratory study used a phenomenological approach to examine the student-athlete's life world in order to translate the feelings, emotions, and situations that occurred before and during retirement. With more understanding of the factors involved, future support can be suggested to help ease the journey into sport termination.
