Thesis (M.F.A.)--Mills College, 2015.
Quiet Enjoyment is a long poem, a lyric autoethnography witnessing the affective, material, social, legal, and economic relationships in which I and other humans are caught up and how those relationships construct, enact, and affect "nature." The speaker meditates on its role in the world, and instead of encountering the intimacies of other humans, animals, or plants only finds legal, material, and economic structures, though these seemingly abstract or inert materials carry all the emotional content that we'd expect to find in human relationships. The speaker accounts for itself as a product of various macro forces and for its affective attachments that encourage the maintenance of these structures (e.g. global capitalism, environmental destruction). Quiet Enjoyment's form is a new take on the epic, a hybrid between the oral traditional poetry of Anglo-Saxon literature and a highly literal, repetitive, and alienated voice. The poem uses Old English forms to engage cultural legacies of social identity, individual subjectivity, and received of natural and social space. The project also incorporates found language from a variety of legal documents and discourse as a window into our present understanding of property and ecology. I exploit the intimacies of the lyric "I" in order to emotionalize this legal language, to render it so personal as to eclipse most all other aspects that normally form our affective life and thereby create a meditation on latent social affects.
