Thesis (M.S.)--University of Kansas, 2015.
Half of this thesis is an examination of Christopher Hitchens in two entwined spheres: anti-totalitarianism and post-ideological politics. To confirm or disconfirm these as themes of Hitchens's work, I used the method of "close reading" to analyze 900 of Hitchens's articles, 250 of his interviews, debates, and discussions, and 12 of his books.

The other half of this thesis is an argument against Hitchens's critics, who have labeled him a reactionary, an imperialist, a racist, an alarmist, a liar, and a sadist. I again used the method of "close reading" to study 200 articles about Hitchens. I then identified major themes, extracted excerpts that distilled these themes, and analyzed the excerpts. After an intensive reading of Hitchens's work, the work of his critics, and the work of his supporters, a clear picture emerged: Hitchens was both anti-totalitarian and post-ideological.

In the anti-totalitarian sphere: Hitchens was a consistent supporter of unfettered freedom of expression, he attacked the all-encompassing oppression and surveillance that are inseparable from monotheistic religion, he correctly identified the inherent aggression of totalitarian states and organizations, he was an encyclopedic chronicler of these entities' crimes, and he was a great foe of illiberal thought in the 20th and 21st centuries (particularly the imposition of violent Islamism and state-organized tyranny).

In the post-ideological sphere: Hitchens never permanently clamped himself to any ideology, he supported military engagements in The Falkland Islands, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya for demonstrably liberal reasons (this support was also an outgrowth of his anti-totalitarianism, which is why I called the spheres "entwined"), and he was never afraid to challenge any party or organization of which he was a member. It is for these reasons that Christopher Hitchens still matters.
