The demand for professionally certified project managers has grown significantly since the mid-1980s and organizational policymakers today associate certification with project manager competence. Despite its popularity, there is little evidence that certification is related to improving the quality of actual projects. This study used ordinary least squares regression to examine 1,444 projects at international consulting firm RGS to assess the relationship between certification and project quality. Contrary to the hypothesis, results indicated that certification was statistically significantly correlated with poorer project quality. Effect size of .18 indicated the effect was consequential and that additional research into the underlying interactions is warranted.
