Thesis (Ph.D.)--Clemson University, 2015.
This project serves as an examination of the beliefs of the American public concerning veterans from Vietnam to Iraq. Many myths and stereotypes have been produced about these men and women, and I argue that these myths and stereotypes are created and reified within the media about these wars. These media include presidential speeches, literature, comics, graphics novels, films and television. With an ongoing argument within the field of History over the truth included in narratives, the importance of these media are often questioned. But even through fictional and fictionalized stories, audiences can learn much about the men and women who have served. There is a clear pattern to the evolution of the veteran in media, with the Vietnam veteran initially vilified and now viewed as a hero, and Iraq veterans all being hailed as heroes. This belief is not only simplified and wrong, but it is also detrimental to the health and happiness of veterans from all wars.
