This literature review addresses the problem of applying a Western therapeutic approach with clients from a collectivistic Japanese culture. The literature discussed in this review highlights the notion that cultural values, lifestyles, and worldviews affect the expression and determination of behavior. This review also discusses how Western psychotherapy may not be applied effectively to individuals from Eastern collectivistic cultures. However, due to the notion that Japanese individuals prefer to utilize Western therapeutic modalities, this review suggests that the problem may be rectified if the client is conceptualized in a multiculturally-competent manner. The suggested model includes 6 factors for the Western therapist to consider: Interdependence, Family Dynamics, Attachment Style, Emotion and Affect, Shame and Guilt, and Values and Beliefs. This review includes a clinical vignette as a step-by-step guide in considering the cultural 6 factors. Additionally, the clinical vignette highlights some of the diagnostic errors that might be made if these factors are not considered.
