Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2015.
The purpose of this dissertation and study was to bring to light the contemporary and lived experiences of second generation Filipino American women. In particular, the issues surrounding their cultural and gender identities as well as experiences and impacts of racism, marginalization, and discrimination were explored. A phenomenological approach was utilized, and three categories that captured the participants' dissonant experiences emerged. Based on the results of this study, it appears the participants experienced conflicts in cultural development, gender development, as well as their behaviors and actions regarding self and others. The participants have had to navigate through a discourse of marginalization to develop multiple and fluid gender and cultural identities in order to adapt to their environments and societal contexts. This study's findings have implications for clinical work with Filipino American women.
