Thesis (Ph.D.)--Gonzaga University, 2015.
Hope has been identified as a complex, yet fundamental dimension of human experiencing (Carlsen, Landsverk-Hagen, & Mortensen, 2012, p. 292; Kelly, 2006, p. 6) that can structure how humans understand the self, the world (van Hooft, 2011, p. 10) and leadership (Razeghi, 2006, p. 235). Since hope can stir the attentiveness of all human senses (Moltmann, 2010/2012, p. 3), reflect the interior convictions of a person, and function as a modifier of leadership style (Doohan, 2011, p. 9), further research exploring the relationship between hope and the practice of leadership is needed. Drawing upon the process-relational insights of Alfred North Whitehead as an ontological perspective, this study investigated the role of hope in the development and practice of leadership in the life, work, and incarceration experience of Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguyen Vân Thuân (1928-2002). A hermeneutic dialogue with the following four official English translations of his writings: Five Loaves & Two Fish (1997/2003), Testimony of Hope (2000), The Road of Hope (2001), and Prayers of Hope (2002) as well as a sympathetic biography titled, The Miracle of Hope (2003) was facilitated in accordance with van Manen's (1997) conceptualization of hermeneutic phenomenology. Six themes emerged during the interpretative analysis of Thuân's texts: (a) suffering: an honest struggle with one's fidelity to the real; (b) God: the great companion -- the fellow sufferer who understands; (c) discernment: a discovery of the hidden wholeness within the present moment; (d) transformation: the light of hope redefines vocation; (e) action: hope as a summons to serve and lead; and (f) hope: an emergent and restorative horizon of the possible. Each thematic formulation was examined, with particular attention paid to how each theme contributed to a deeper and more thorough understanding of the elements and emergence of hope. As his texts suggest, Thuan's lived experience reflected the kernel components of hope as well as a life-affirming response to unavoidable suffering rooted in servant-leadership. Implications for both leadership theorists and practitioners who seek to engender hope in the people, communities, and organizations they lead are explored and potential pathways for further research are discussed.
