This study explored whether adult attachment could help explain the relationship between perceived stress and alcohol use. A sample of firefighters (N = 69) were surveyed online using the Experiences in Close Relationships -- Short Form (ECR-S), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). There were three hypotheses: (1) There will be a significant difference in attachment between firefighters whose responses to the AUDIT place them in the hazardous or harmful drinking group (YES AUDIT) and those whose responses show no hazardous or harmful drinking (NO AUDIT); (2) Firefighter's perceived stress and their endorsement of hazardous or harmful drinking will be significantly correlated; and (3) Attachment scores will mediate the relationship between perceived stress and alcohol use. The first hypothesis was supported; there was a significant difference in attachment between the YES AUDIT and NO AUDIT groups. The second hypothesis was not supported; perceived stress was not correlated to scores on the AUDIT. The third hypothesis was not supported, and there is not enough evidence to suggest the assumed mediation effect exist.
