Thesis (Ph.D.)--Concordia University Chicago, 2015.
The researcher used a convergent parallel mixed-methods approach to examine any correlations between lateral dominance in left-sided dominant athletes (LDAs) and sport performance by examining the implementation (selection of athletes for making the team), participation levels (playing time), and athletic achievement (recorded statistics) of left-sided athletes within their given sport. This study also examined any societal influences of laterality within sport participation. Increased athletic skill can lead to better opportunities, college recruitment, and possible professional league play. The tactical advantage of having a left-handed athlete may prove to be immeasurable. With the norm (population majority) being right-sided, the left-sided athlete (population minority) has the advantage of surprise and difference. This orientation may generate a higher likelihood of success if the opponent is expecting something else. Athletic skill and achievement of an individual player contributes to overall skill level and team success. Previous articles focused on anatomical correlations and societal pressures on left-sided individuals throughout history. This research study was the first to use both the AHPQ, EHI (seminal measurement tools), along with the participants' personal classification of handedness in a laterality study connecting measurable handedness with sport performance to show the correlation of laterality within the sport setting.
