Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2014.
Within the past few years, the women of the American Renaissance have been written back into history. However, scholarship concerning Eastern sacred texts and female Transcendentalists remains limited and continues to exist on the periphery of the study of American "orientalism," keeping the nexus of East-West "literary religion" focused on Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Hawthorne, Poe, and a handful of others. I seek to broaden this focus to include Lydia Maria Child and Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, whose Eastern gestures have a great deal in common with male writers of the American Renaissance. Their inclusion of literary religion and Eastern philosophies in their writing helped redefine the story of the West by returning to the East for "hidden springs of truth"---literary fountainheads that influenced the collective conscience of the nation through a marked and shared interest in abolition, expansionism, women's suffrage, and education for women and children.
