Water is one important factor for economic development since its availability is critical for the production of goods and services, firm relocation decisions and human consumption. This study evaluates the impact of water availability on economic development putting emphasis on 222 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with a population of 100,000 people or more. The impact of water availability in urban economic development is measured using an empirical analysis that uses the Water Supply Stress Index (WASSI) as a variable for water availability. Water scarcity is found to have a negative impact on GDP, one of the proxies used for economic development. It was also found that there is a positive relationship between water scarcity and poverty, but the relationship was not statistically significant.
