520 $a The study focuses on the period of the early 2000s, when Thailand liberalized the trade sector by reducing tariff rates over time. This affected the revenues and expenditures of the Thai government. To strengthen the domestic economy, the government restructured personal income tax rates. The aim was to increase the disposable income of consumers in the expectation that this would stimulate domestic consumption. Furthermore, trade liberalization affected the labor market by changing the skill wage premium (the ratio of the wages of skilled workers to those of unskilled workers).
520 $a General equilibrium models are used in this study. I construct a social accounting matrix for Thailand in 2005 to analyze the effects of personal income tax reform on three types of households: high-skilled, medium-skilled, and unskilled. The findings show that reducing the tax burden for high-skilled households from 22% to 19% increased the welfare of these households by 3.88%, and reducing the tax burden for medium-skilled households from 12% to 9% increased their welfare by 3.22%. For unskilled households, a tax burden reduction from 5% to 3% enhanced their welfare by 2.26%.
520 $a To analyze how the skill premium is affected by trade liberalization, I use a trade model of monopolistic competition with heterogeneous firms. The estimation is based on a 2003 survey of Thai manufacturing firms. The model reveals that the wage rate of skilled workers is approximately 47% higher than that of unskilled workers. Following the reduction in trade costs, the skill premium increases. Additionally, trade liberalization attracts new exporters to the foreign market while the least productive non-exporting firms leave the market.
