The goal of this dissertation is to describe and characterize clause combining phenomena in Korean through a discourse-pragmatic analysis of some conjunctive morphemes used in spoken discourse data. I show that the grammar of clause-combining in Korean can better be understood from a discourse perspective. The analysis of some Korean spoken texts shows that Korean morphosyntactic patterns of clause-combining are fully interpretable only when one considers clausal connectives in the discourse contexts where they occur.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In Chapter 2, I review general literature on clause combining and inter-clausal relations. Also I discuss some basic assumptions about human language and discourse notions.

In Chapter 3, I describe Korean verbal affixes and review some literature which deals with the issues of classifying the verbal affixes and characterizing clause combining phenomena.

In Chapter 4, I discuss grammatical properties of the six most frequently used connectives through discourse analysis: -ko, -mye, -myense, -ese, -nikka, and -nuntey, -taka. The examination shows that the characterization of the clausal connectives should be done based on the close examination of the morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of clausal connectives while considering the discourse contexts where each connective in question appears.

In Chapter 5, I discuss the relationship between clause combining and topic continuity in terms of introducing referents into discourse and tracking them.

In Chapter 6, I discuss properties of connectives in terms of discourse organization. Upon the assumption that discourse is not only linearly organized but also hierarchically structured, I show that discourse has a structure which is made up of clauses with various relations in a hierarchical way.

Chapter 7 discusses the coordination and subordination dichotomy with respect to the issues of classifying Korean clausal connectives. I pointed out that the dichotomy of coordination and subordination dichotomy is not adequate for describing clause combining phenomena.

Chapter 8 summarizes findings of the research on Korean clausal connectives and discusses the implications of the discourse analysis of the Korean verbal affixes in dealing with clause combining phenomena in general. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
