In the present dissertation the total range of semantics and functions of three prepositions which shared the ablative function in Old Bulgarian (s, ot and iz) are examined in Old, Middle and Modern Bulgarian. The goal of this research is to explain both synchronically and diachronically the semantics of these prepositions using the Sign-Theoretic model of language structure developed by C. H. van Schooneveld.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The present analysis is based on linguistic descriptions of preposition usage and semantics, and data gathered by the author by excerpting all instances of the three prepositions in approximately 18,000 running words each for the Old, Middle and Early Modern Bulgarian periods. The texts used are: I. Old Bulgarian: Presbyter Koz'ma's Sermon against the Bogomils; II. Middle Bulgarian: Evtimij Turnovskij's Life of Ivan Ril'skij and Eulogy of Saint Nedelja, and Grigorij Camblak's Eulogy of Evtimij Turnovskij and Funeral Oration for Kiprian; and III. Early Modern Bulgarian: the first seven sections of the Tixonrav Homilies (to leaf 30ob). All data is presented in appendices.

In this work, the applicability of the semantic feature system developed by van Schooneveld for Russian is demonstrated for both Old and Modern Bulgarian, and all functions of the three prepositions attested in the data are explained in terms of these features. The ablative function is shown to derive from the combination of verification, and either cancellation (iz and ot) or preidentity (s)--both disjunctive features. This function may be modified by the addition of demarcation, which adds the perception of dimensions. The ablative use of iz in Modern Bulgarian is restricted to instances where the dimensionality indicated by demarcation is emphasized. Additionally, demarcation allows for cancellation to take place within the dimensional boundaries of an object--giving the locative-distributional function of iz. Furthermore, in Modern Bulgarian s, with its demarcation marking, can no longer indicate ablation, since demarcation (unlike cancellation) occurs before 'time' is introduced into the feature hierarchy. In Old Bulgarian this lack is compensated for in the semantics of the genitive case.
