There have been many studies on the sound system underlying the rhyme dictionary Qieyun (601A.D., QY), the oldest extant document which systematically presents a classification of syllables (i.e., homonym groups) of Ancient Chinese; however, the phonemic system of the language has not yet been satisfactorily explored. Based upon the internal evidence, this study endeavors to investigate the phonemic contrasts in the system and to show how it evolved into Middle Chinese.

The approach taken is based upon the belief that the truly phonemic study of a language investigates the native speakers' intuition towards the language. To uncover the native speakers' intuition, the study should center on the materials which can reveal the sound system of the language at the time under study. The rhyme dictionary QY, a record of the contemporary language at the time it was compiled, provides us with all the necessary information about the phonemic system of the language by giving us all the contrasting syllables. Through logically analyzing the contrasts among the homonym groups in QY, this study succeeds in uncovering the phonemic system of the language recorded in the dictionary.

In determining the sound changes from QY to the rhyme tables, contrary to traditional assumption, this study argues that the rhyme tables represent an independent later stage of the Chinese language, rather than merely tabulating a certain rhyme dictionary of several centuries earlier. The difference between QY and the rhyme tables evidences sound changes between the two stages and the independence of the two systems.

The result of this study shows a phonemic system with thirty-six initials, seven vowels, and eleven endings (including the zero ending). With the proposed system and sound changes, the imported elements such as the Chongniu phenomenon are singled out, the problematic classifications in the system (e.g. the distinction between the four rhyme-sets Xin X, Yuan X, Hun X, Hen X) are all reasonably accounted for, and most importantly, a clear picture of the QY system is revealed.
