The purpose of this study is to determine whether sharing common land strengthens sense of community within urban neighborhoods. There are three research objectives in this study: (1) determine the contributions of the activities on common land to sense of community; (2) define the effects from the spatial characteristics of common land on sense of community; and (3) substantiate the influence from individual perception of common land on sense of community.

Based on the characteristics of common land, the neighborhoods in the Taipei residential area are classified into four types of communities: the Settlers' neighborhood (Type I), the Functionalism neighborhood (Type II), the Super-block neighborhood (Type III), and the New-dream neighborhood (Type IV). The researcher conducted the survey with an eighteen-statement scale modified from the Nasar and Julian's scale (1995) to measure sense of community and also to study the frequency of participation in activities on common land in urban neighborhoods in Taipei. In each type of neighborhood, the researcher selected one typical neighborhood, the Wan-Ho neighborhood (the Settlers' neighborhood: Type I), the Kao-Tai neighborhood (the Functionalism neighborhood: Type II), the Chen-Kung neighborhood (the Super-block neighborhood: Type III), and the Lon-Sam-Lin neighborhood (the New-dream neighborhood: Type IV). There were 528 respondents (Type I = 106, Type II = 102, Type III = 205, Type IV = 115). In this study, the scores for sense of community among these four neighborhoods were significantly different. Respondents from the Functionalism neighborhood (Type II) had significantly lower scores for sense of community. The results also show that daily activities importantly influenced sense of community within urban neighborhoods. From the observation for daily activity movements in these four selected neighborhoods, the subjects more often participated in activities on semi-public space and less traffic area within their common land. From the study results, the frequency of participation in activities on common land, the perception of common land, physical designs, and demographic characteristics comprehensively affect sense of community within urban neighborhoods.
