Technological advances are changing traditional ways of delivering educational courses, with many technical colleges now offering online instruction. However, previous studies have generated concerns regarding differences in students' learning outcomes and dropout rates between traditional learning and online courses. This qualitative, exploratory study investigates the outcomes of students who transition from a traditional environment to an online environment within the technical college setting, from the perspectives of instructors and administrators. Based on in-depth interviews with a sample of 14 faculty and six administrators from one technical college in the rural south-eastern United States, the study investigates the research participants' perceptions of the issues and challenges encountered when students migrate from courses offered in traditional classroom settings to courses offered online, and explores their views on what can be done to mitigate these issues or challenges. Three main challenges are identified that potentially cause a change in student outcomes: reduced levels of interaction between faculty and students; a lack of independent learning skills among students; and technical issues or problems. Although most participants expressed a preference for traditional face-to-face instruction, the majority also recognized the benefits of online learning and identified a range of measures that can help overcome the challenges and improve student outcomes. These fell broadly into two categories: 1) monitoring student progress and providing support when necessary, and 2) design considerations, such as the use of hybrid courses. The study adds to the body knowledge regarding student outcomes from on-line courses, and provides practical information that is likely to be of interest and practical use to other technical colleges.
