In this study, hot water extraction of Paulownia elongata woodchips in a M/K digester was first investigated at 145 to 165?C for 4 h. Yield variations of sugars and sugar degradation products with time were analyzed to evaluate the effect of temperature and reaction time on the extraction process. Xylose and xylooligomers were found to be the major sugars in the hot water wood extract while minor sugars, including glucose, arabinose, rhamnose, galactose, and mannose, were also obtained. The yield of xylose increased with time and temperature while the yield of xylooligomers decreased at high temperatures with extended times. About 50-65% initial xylan was extracted into the liquor, which were mostly composed of xylooligomers (up to 90 %). And hot water extraction was also carried out in a pilot-scale digester at 160?C for 2.5h with woodchips of Paulownia elongata, southern hardwood mixture (mainly gum, oak, and maple), and boreal aspen (mainly Populus tremuloides). Similar yield variations of products with time were observed in the pilot-scale digester. However, higher total xylose yield was obtained in the pilot-scale digester. And the xylooligomers in the pilot-scale digester appeared to have longer chains than in the lab-scale digester.

The sugars and sugar degradation products obtained from hot water extraction were analyzed through Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence (HSQC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). A new method for xylooligomers quantification was developed based on NMR. The acquisition of xylooligomer concentration enables fundamental approaches to the kinetic analysis of hot-water extraction.

Kinetic models based on zeroth-order kinetics with Arrhenius-type temperature dependence of rate constant were employed to quantify yields of dissolved solids, major and minor sugars, and sugar degradation products in M/K and pilot-scale digester. Experimental data from the extraction in both M/K and pilot-scale digester were used to determine the parameters by Microsoft Excel with Odexlims and Microsoft Excel solver through minimizing the sum of squares of the deviation between experimental and predicted data. The model predictions agreed with the experimental data from both the M/K and pilot-scale digesters.
