Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2015.
This study raised the question: is applied hands-on learning in higher education meeting the needs of 21st century agricultural employers? This quasi-experimental study was developed to determine the impact of applied hands-on agricultural courses related to students' perceptions of 67 employability skills. Kolb's theory of experiential learning served as the theoretical framework for this study. This research study consisted of a pretest and posttest and took place at two Northeast colleges of agriculture and technology. The data collected was from 266 students who participated in the pretest and 227 students who participated in the posttest. The data was analyzed using the t Test: Two Sample Assuming Equal Variances and the t Test: Sample Assuming Unequal Variances, with a significance level of p < .05. Based on the findings, the null hypothesis was accepted; there was no significant difference in the change in perceptions of workforce readiness from before to after initial summer employment between freshmen agricultural students who completed an applied agriculture course and those who did not. In addition, this research revealed insightful information regarding students' perceived weaknesses related to communication skills and other important skills sought by agricultural employers.
